Your license can be suspended for a variety of reasons, including:

There are three tiers of charges for driving on a suspended license:
Third degree — The least serious, this is a misdemeanor charge and has a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and $1,000 in fines. This is generally charged if you have too many unpaid tickets or you have had your license suspended for a different criminal offense, such as DUI.
Second degree — More serious, this is a gross misdemeanor with the potential for 364 days in jail and $5,000 in fines. This usually follows serious or felony traffic offenses.
First degree — Uncommon and generally reserved for serial traffic offenders, this carries a possible 364 days in jail and $5,000 in fines. With each additional charge, however, you face minimum time spent in jail, ranging from 10 days to 180 days.
Consequences related to driving on a suspended license can quickly spiral into more significant issues if you continue to drive on the suspended license or accrue other infractions.
